Recently, the UN established the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to tackle poverty and ensure sustainability for future generations around the world. Agrium had a role in creating these ambitious targets that shape the actions and discussions of governments, not-for-profits, industry and other stakeholders over the next 15 years – and our efforts support the pursuit of the goals every day.
Agrium has a seat on the UN’s Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) Leadership Council, which contributed to the formation of the goals. Having a voice in the network allowed Agrium to bring our extensive agricultural experience and knowledge to the world table.
“These goals identify what the priorities of the world are, in terms of taking better care of people and the environment, on every continent and in every village,” says Doug Beever, Senior Director of Sustainability and Stakeholder Relations for Agrium.
But creating the goals was just the beginning. Agrium is now working with organizations around the world to work toward achieving these goals – in shared value partnerships like The 4R Nutrients Solution.
This video shows how an SDSN-led partnership is using the Agrium-supported 4R Nutrient Stewardship System to help growers in Kenya to sustainably produce more food from the same amount of land. That puts more money in the hands of farmers, who can then afford things like school fees, medical care or even expanding their farm to include other crops or animals. The ability to harvest more food from existing fields reduces the need to import food, or bring habitat into agricultural production. The ability to keep and transport surplus is an essential component of livelihood sustainability and an increased crop yield is one of the first steps. The 4R system has the additional advantage of decreasing greenhouse gas emissions from nitrogen.
Agrium is committed to a range of shared value partnerships like The Nutrients Solution, and the company’s efforts to be the world’s leading provider of agricultural products, services and solutions contributes to progress on many of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, including:
- Goal 2: End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture.
- Goal 6: Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.
- Goal 12: Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns.
- Goal 13: Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.
- Goal 15: Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss.
Meanwhile, Agrium helps members of the next generation learn about land stewardship, food sustainability and related issues, through our education programs – particularly Journey 2050. We’re proud to help foster a growing global awareness of the interdependence of economic, social and environmental priorities.
“We’re seeing sustainability in schools, and on the agendas of food companies and retail companies,” Doug says. “Sustainability is finding its way onto the priority list all over the world, and Agrium is a dedicated driver of this important work.”
