People Metrics: Calculating the Right Fit for Agrium’s Workforce
On the big job hunt? Eyes strained from the endless job postings? They may seem like just words on a page, but at Agrium, there is much more to job placement than meets the eye. Finding the right Agrium employee means more than just filling a position on the org chart or finding someone to occupy a cubicle. It’s all about finding the right people for the right job – at the right time. Yes, there’s a lot of planning and thinking that goes into creating and filling a position here at Agrium.
It’s called People Metrics – the fine art of applying people statistics and demographics to align the employee need with the business strategy. Metrics are what drive decision-making related to our talent at Agrium and helps us identify the right strategy, by understanding those demographics and employee’s expectations in the workplace.
Agrium HR has made significant strides in identifying and implementing strong people metrics tools and workforce analytics in the past two years, including our Annual People Metrics Report; Quarterly Interactive Workforce Dashboards; Exit Surveys; and Employee Engagement Surveys. These tools consolidate and present current statistics and trends to help us make strategic employment decisions, ensuring that we are hiring the right people and serving our employees’ needs.
People metrics also allow the company to better understand our human capital investments; implement effective strategic workforce planning; and design the right programs. Most importantly, they allow us to find the best people for our positions, helping us build an employee base that is invested, fulfilled and challenged.
“People metrics play an important role in helping Agrium build the workforce of the future,” says Jim Grossett, Senior Vice President of Human Resources for Agrium. “HR professionals today have access to a suite of analytical tools like never before — analyses that help inform our leaders with high-performance, high-level, and highly effective perspectives and insights.”
For instance, here is a sample of global Agrium people metrics - All Business Units for 2012:
Total Headcount: 14,467 regular employees
Learning & Development investment: $750/employee
Percentage of employees voluntarily leaving: 10.6% (includes retirements)
Agrium has kept a consistently low turnover rate for the past several years – and that comes as no surprise to us!
